The possibilities of a new year

Happy New Year! Absolutely nothing changes than the date on the calendar but there's something very special about the year ticking over and having the chance to draw a line in the sand to reflect on how the previous 365 days has been and consciously choosing whether you want to alter anything in the coming 365 days.

I have always been a big supporter of marking the end of the year. It's the time I do my Year in Review and answer questions like:

  • What were my greatest achievements of 2017?

  • What was my most important accomplishment and why?

  • Who are the people I need to thank for helping me achieve my goals?

  • What mistakes and lessons did I learn in 2017?

  • How satisfied am I with the life I'm living and what do I need to change?

  • Do I have any big, unfulfilled dreams that I keep putting off?

  • What legacy am I building?

  • Are all of my important relationships in harmony?

  • What am I ready to let go of?

  • What are my goals in 2018?

  • If I could only achieve one thing in 2018, what would it be?

  • What am I most excited about creating in 2018?

  • What feeling do I want to carry with me in 2018 to base my decisions on?

At the beginning of 2017 I made the decision to try and live a simple and non-eventful year. The previous ten years I had made numerous wild and lofty goals that produced seismic shifts in my world and the worlds of my family. Being on an earn out with my company Begin Bright, that I sold in 2016, meant that for the first time in my life I was a full time employee and had 40 hours a week committed to doing what someone else set for me. It has been challenging to say the least for more reasons than I can put into a blog post. As I write this, I finish my employment in 30 days and feel like I'm a race horse about to have the bit taken out of it's mouth. I cannot wait to run free again and make my life happen the way I want it to and not have to answer to anyone but the person staring back at me in the mirror. The year that has been was just as we planned, pretty non-eventful as I focussed on finishing what I started with Begin Bright. It may mean though that everything that has been brewing and waiting in the wings is about to come flying out! Thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2018 leaves me feeling ridiculously excited and also a little nervous and overwhelmed.

I've had the same business for a very long time that being back in start up land and putting everything on the line again gives me that rush of heady uncertainty. I do firmly believe that we're born to do more than just live, survive and die. Sure, putting ourselves out there opens us up for disappointment and heartbreak, but that's living and I want to experience all of the highs, the lows and everything in between.

My goals for 2018:

  • Increase number of private business coaching clients from 5 to 10.

  • Launch The Tutoring Institute online business coaching program for tutors.

  • Launch my Accelerate online business coaching courses

  • Have my book published (I've finally written it after this goal has been on my list for 10 years!)

  • Get a development deal for my film project The Impossible Quest

  • Have my jewellery company, Jay St, hit $500k in revenue

  • Do 2 speaking engagements per month

  • Practice meditation every day

  • Lose the weight I've put on over the past 2 years (so cliched I know. I gained 17kg in the past 3 years when I got adrenal fatigue from stressing out too much. Big goal this year is to let go of anger, forgive and focus on the positive energy of the future so I can get my body working again. I know that to achieve everything I want to achieve I need to have optimal energy, and that's only going to come from getting back into exercising and into my fittest self. Shame about that, it's much easier for me to do yoga and walks than to run and do weights but unfortunately it doesn't keep me in the shape I need to be in to perform at my best).

  • Write a chapter for Secrets of Entrepreneurs Exposed by Dale Beaumont

  • Attend SXSW in Texas

  • Get funding for Raxy (my new company, an online marketplace for connecting freelancers and business people to office space around the world. Like Air BnB but for hot desks, offices and meeting spaces) and launch it late in the year.

  • Pack up our house, pull the kids out of school and leave on our 1 year trip around the world in an experiment of travelling with children and getting to experience great things with them, being able to travel while building growing businesses, learning a new language and experiencing all the world has to offer. With close to 11 years of planning, this one is pretty darn exciting!

I do know that not everything is going to work out but I also feel like I want to try lots of different things and see where the world takes me and be open to opportunities and follow the universal pulls. I have the freedom that I'm so grateful for and I want a year of playing with that and experiencing all of those different things. I had a friend ask me if I was worried about publicly failing in a new business after such a success because people have higher expectations of me and the answer is a massive no. While I do care about you and what you think to a certain degree, I share my thoughts and stories in an effort to encourage others to live a big life and go for their dreams. What better way to show that than to go out into the world and experience as much as I can and be willing to fall flat on my face. One of my favourite sayings is that you either win or you learn. I have done so much learning about business in the past 14 years that starting again is now so much easier and faster but there's still so much to learn and to me, that's what life's all about, the journey.

There's a really great guy called Jospeh Campbell that says you should "Follow your bliss" and look at what makes you happy and what makes you come alive and find your joy and let it run your life. I know that there are 5 main things that make me happy:

  1. My family (my husband Mat, our two gorgeous boys Kai and Cohen and our puppy Holly)

  2. Playing the game of business

  3. Having a moment of alone time each day to walk, breathe, meditate and journal

  4. Having giant belly laughs with friends

  5. Experiencing the wonderment of the world with new people, places and experiences

And I will follow those things to the end of the Earth.

Happy New Year, I really do hope for you that this one is your greatest one ever, and whatever you do, you find what makes YOU happy and stick it out to achieve your wildest dreams. Remember that you are capable of amazing things if you're open to them and are willing to try. Life is to short to live on someone else's agenda. Find what makes your heart sing and what gives most value to you, your family and the world and just do it!
