Milestones

I love to celebrate milestones. It gives a line in the sand where we can reflect just how far we've come and how much further we still have to go. Plus, an awesome excuse for celebration! Last week I got to speak at the Commonwealth Bank Women in Focus conference which was a hugely cathartic experience for me because of milestones and the reflection in how much had changed.

Today marks 8 years since I officially launched Begin Bright. It's 12 years since I started my first tutoring centre. It's 5 years since the first Begin Bright franchise started. It's 4 years since my first Women in Focus conference (more about the significance of that below), 3 years since we packed up and left Sydney to move to Pottsville and 3 months since I sold my business. 4 years ago I attended my first Commbank Women in Focus conference and it totally changed the course of my life. I was invited by Business Chicks (the golden ticket for any woman in business) and went along feeling so far out of my depth.

I had been franchising for a year and was putting every cent we had into that and continually reinvesting our profits and wondering if all of the hard work and sacrifice was ever going to pay off. It did. I was asked to speak to reflect on what I've done in the past 4 years to build our little tutoring company into a national franchise that's just been acquired by international education company, Cognition Education. It's obviously a long story, but what I want the point of this post to be, is access your networks.

I was so lucky to be introduced to some amazing people that really lifted me up and help me boost my business. It opened doors to so many more opportunities that wouldn't have happened otherwise. It can be isolating when you're running your own business and have so much responsibility on your shoulders that when you get to talk to other people who are in the same boat as you are, trying just as hard to make a positive impact on the world and their lives, it's inspiring. Last week’s conference was no different. It was exceptional! 180 women having conversations from 6:30am until midnight about building businesses, the military, politics, parenting and health for three days straight.

All of those things that you can only have in common with like minded people who are having a massive crack at life. Call your local networking group today, Business Chicks and Women in Focus and start sharing, learning and living the life that you've imagined.
