Ep120 Why do we work so hard and everything else that's wrong with me

Episode 120 of Her Empire Builder Podcast is a little more conversational than others. If you are wanting a more linear, 5 steps to X type of episode, I would skip and listen to one of my other ones. This episode, delves in to some deep things I discovered at a recent health retreat. I took a couple of days off with some girlfriends, in similar positions as myself (I.e. the breadwinner of the family) and had some really interesting conversations about life. Whilst at the health retreat, I opted for a hypnotherapy session and all I can say is WOW. I discovered some pretty interesting things. One thing that I mentioned to the therapist was that I wanted to move my body more, and that I found it so difficult to do what is such a 'simple' task to others. Where as, I could spend my days working and talking to people all day, with such ease that some people would find so challenging. I wanted to know why it was so difficult to do this one thing for myself, and put my health in a front running position on the priority list, just as my business is.

The therapist managed to explain it in such a beautiful way, I just had to share it with you. Imagine your life is like a 4 wheeled car. If the two wheels on the right hand side represented your work / business / financial situation and the two wheels on your left hand side represented your free time / physical health / mental health - if all of your time is spent on the right hand side (i.e. business) and no time on the left hand side, your car would be going around in constant circles. If you put your time in to balancing out both sides equally, then your car is going to move forward.

As soon as she said this, it was like something clicked. I knew what I had to do.

I've always worked really hard, multiple jobs, multiple businesses, through babies and just just really been in a hurry to do as much as I possibly can with life. Because, I've been so scared to miss out on anything.

And lately, I've been thinking like I need to slow down I actually need to slow down so that I can enjoy it more instead of how I've been going which has been going full pelt so I can enjoy it more. So I'm at this real crossroads in going which way is the better way to live. And I don't know, I have no answers with this. I used to think that working double the hours, and getting double the results was the measure of success. Sure, it may be good for the bottom line, but you're going to work yourself into an early grave. And then, I started to think are we just here to work? No, of course not. And so one thing that I did was I sat down and I wrote a life plan. I wrote down what I wanted to achieve each year, and figured out what I needed to do in order to align my days, weeks, months & years to achieve those goals.

That's the beautiful thing about choices. We are so lucky to be in a privileged situation where we have a plethora of choices to choose from, and how we wanted our life designed. So, I believe it's our responsibility to realise how lucky we are that we actually have the ability to make choices for our future selves.
