Intro

Hello, and welcome to episode 188 of her Empire Builder Podcast. Today I am sharing with you 10 things, every course creator needs to go from zero to $1 million in revenue. And the reason that I chose this podcast topic for you today is that I get so many questions from people and going, you know, do I just need to learn social media? Or do I just need to learn launching? Or do I just need to learn this, and there are so many different courses for everything. And one of the main reasons that I created Her Empire Builder is because as difficult as it is, you need all the things, they don't work in silo. And if you have big dreams, and you have big hopes, and you want to do all of these incredible things with your business, then you do need to do all the things. Sometimes you can get away without them. Once you get past that million dollars, there are a lot of people I know that can successfully stop doing some of those things. And look, there's always a choice, there are some of the things in the 10 that I'll say today that you might go, “you know, I don't know if I really want to do that”. And if it's not aligned, then definitely you don't do the thing. But these are the ones that will get you there the quickest. And the easiest way that I have seen repeated time and time again, from our members inside Her Empire Builder in levelling up their business and getting incredible results in getting you know, 30k launch when they only started a few months ago, or doubling their revenue or reaching half a million dollars or a million dollars.

So I want to share them with you because I think sometimes you only see the parts that are on the outside without knowing all of the things that happen behind the scenes. And often when I go through this with people, they go, Wow, that's that's a lot. Like that's a lot of things. I don't know if I have the time and energy for that. And this is something that I like to always put out in the open when I have doors open to Her Empire Builder. So doors are open right now there are about six days left. So if you want to do that, go to herempirebuilder.com. And jump on in with us because it shows you all the things and I will never sugarcoat, I guess, is the right word. But I'll never give you a bum-steer I'll never say “You know, this is super easy.” There are definitely ways to make it easier. And I can call these 10 Other ways to build your business as easy and as quickly as possible. But it does take massive effort. And if people are making it look like there's no effort, it's because it's marketing. Like it's all just great marketing. And that's the positioning of where they are in the market. But I can guarantee you that a lot of people are doing a lot of work behind the scenes, it doesn't happen by accident, otherwise, everyone would have a million dollar business. And the reason that people don't is because you don't know how to implement all the things and how to do them all concurrently with each other. So that is what today's episode is about is running you through those 10.

And then if that resonates with you, and you go, you know what I want to do the 10 Like, I'm ready to put in effort, I don't want to waste time I don't want to fluff about, I just want to get in and do the things that are going to bring me the biggest results for my time and money investment, then I've got you covered in her Empire Builder, I will never tell you, it's a piece of cake, you will work harder in your first year than you possibly ever have.

One of my favourite entrepreneurial quotes is “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won't, so that you can live the rest of your life like most people can't.” And if you want to be with the very few that actually create a successful business, you know, whether it's your if you if your goal is just to go $100,000 A year and that's it. And you know, that's happy. That's great. Like, that's a really beautiful lifestyle business, you're getting paid really well. You're having a really great lifestyle, you don't have to do all of these things. Her Empire Builder probably isn't for you.

But if you are in that stage where you're like somewhere between naught to 500,000. And you're like, well actually, I don't want to cap on this. I want to see how far I can go. I want to see what I'm capable of. I want to say, ``Let's do the journey”. Let's get on this ride. Let's go for it. If that's what you're thinking, then I can help you out there. Alright, let's get into the 10 things every course creator needs to go from zero to a million dollars.

Main episode

Okay, number one is your ascension model. Now, what I think is one of the most obvious things to start with is a course. And I know that that sounds really simple, but I can't tell you how many people that I talked to, that have been dreaming of their online business for years, like, maybe it's been a year, maybe it's been two years, maybe it's been five years. And they're going “I've got this idea for a course I'm doing this service based business right now, I know I could scale it, I haven't created my product yet. That is step one is to create your course. So that is what we make sure everyone in her Empire Builder has their course launched as quickly as possible. Now we do have some people that start with us that don't yet they already have a successful service based business but don't have their course going. And they use the programme to get that sorted. So the first one to start with is obviously your costs. And then we work on your ascension model, because what I see is that too many people spend time on non revenue generating activities in their business, you know, we can get really caught up in creating a cool website, our branding, building our lists, playing on social media, like there is a lot of busy work that we can be doing that looks like work that's not actually revenue generating. And so in our Empire build out, we focus on getting you up and running and making money.

If you want to make money, then that is what we're going for. If that's triggering at all in going, oh, oh, do I want to make money, then you probably shouldn't be in business. Because the way that we run a healthy, sustainable, profitable business, the way that we are able to make a bigger impact, and reach more people, is to run a profitable business. So first, we obviously start with the course. Then as you're gaining momentum, we fill out that ascension model. So it does look different for everybody. And this is one of the frustrating parts is sometimes I'll have people join Her Empire Builder, and they'll go, you know, like, what is your recommended ascension model? Do we have a course, a membership, private coaching? Is that what it looks like? Or do we have this, that and this?

And my answer can frustrate people sometimes because my answer is that it depends. So I think one of the best things about any business, whether it's online or not, is it allows us to kind of design the business based on the life that we want to live. And based on what gives us a lot of joy and how we can deliver our service to our customers, and how we can kind of get that pumping. So for some people, follow the way I run my membership. I have gone live every single week forever, because I did the same thing with my previous business nearly nine years, every week, I have never missed one. And for some people, they're like, “Whoa, that's a big commitment.” For me, I don't mind that I quite like memberships. I like building community. I like knowing people inside. I like the culture that that creates. And it makes me feel good. For other people, they like to be a lot more anonymous, like a lot more just focused on the content and not so much on the community.

So a short course, low cost high volume is going to suit them better. But what I try and kind of lead to Is everyone having a teeny offer. So something that's like, you know, somewhere between seven and $50, that can be on your website that's like a paid lead magnet like a next level step up to just a normal downloadable lead magnet that can get people into that customer journey. And then I love to have an evergreen product. So something that's more of a signature prelude to whatever your live launch programme is. So having an evergreen product there, so that when you're speaking on stages, and when you're on other people's podcasts, and when you're doing different things. You can drop the link for that evergreen product and have a whole evergreen pipeline going to that. And then a live launch programme which is your signature. It's what you're known for. It's the thing that's going to give you everything that you kind of want to be known for. One that you want to stand for and that perfect customer needs. And then it's looking at if it's suitable adding in a membership or a high end offering as well.

I love memberships. And I think for a lot of people, when they really nail the live launch signature programme, you'll inevitably have customers going, Hey, I'm not really ready to stop yet. Like, I want to keep going, I want to stay in this community, I want to keep learning from you, I want to take that next level. And that's when a membership can come in so handy. And there's so many options to that, whether it's, you know, a $27 a month with low contact points, or whether it's $2,700 a month, and it's got some personal elements in there, whatever that's going to be, we kind of have our offer menu that you pick and choose from to craft your own offers and your own membership in there. And then a high end offering is great, too. So things like VIP days, private consulting, private coaching, whatever it is in there. That's how we craft your ascension model.

So then we have number two, which is content and credibility. So the online business world is constantly moving. And we need to access the advantages of not only social media, but all types of content. And social media especially is something that people can have a love hate relationship with, right? People will love it, or people like oh my gosh, I never want to be on social media. Or be really, really scared about you know, going live on socials or creating reels or, you know, getting on Tik Tok, or whatever it's going to be. So what I said at the start, you don't have to do all these things like you can definitely build a business without using social media. But if you want to do it the easy way, if you want to do it as quickly as possible, then you kind of got to get over that you've kind of got to go, you know what this is where my customers are. And so I'm gonna go talk to them there. And so for me, it takes a lot of reframing. I don't love social media in terms of, I actually don't share much personally, social media, I share to talk with my clients, I share to connect and add value and try and give as much value as I can, in a business sense. And so for me, I had to reframe it in going well, I want to connect with my clients, I want to have that avenue. And that's how that can enable us to do that. But we don't just want to do social media. And that's the only type of content we want to do other things that are going to build your expertise that are going to make you the thought leader in your industry, your go to person so that when someone's asking for something that is your area, they're like, oh, my gosh, Susan, she's the best, you've got to go to Susan, that one. We want to make you that key person. And so we look at all the different types of content. So we try and encourage everyone to have the monthly lead magnet ever changing social media strategies, you know, like Tic TOCs, just coming into play reels. And now taking over Instagram, we want to keep up with those. And it's part of my job as running her Empire Builder to stay abreast of all of those changes, so that I can pass them on to my members as well.

So we do monthly lead magnets, we do the social media, we encourage you to write articles, win awards, we just had a whole heap of our clients all go in award systems, a few of them took out the wedding, which was so exciting. And the reason for that is building credibility is getting some opportunities for that marketing. And so we do that we look at third party media, which can't be discounted. So we kind of know what I mean by all the things they all work in conjunction together. Does it take effort? Yes. Is everyone willing to put in the effort? No, it is lonely at the top because everyone is willing to like, you know, coast a little bit. Everyone's gonna do their couple of things. But not everyone is willing to go above and beyond to go that extra mile. And so when you do all of these things, that's why our clients naturally do well, is because they're like, Ah, I have a system. I have a strategy. Okay. Yeah. Cool. I'll just do the next thing on the list. So that's all part of what you learn inside her Empire Builder.

Okay, number three, is podcasting. You're listening to my podcast right now. I love podcasting. I love it. Love it, love it, love it, love it, love it. So I think if you want to reach a seven figure business as quickly and easily as possible, we help all our members to have their own podcast and to be a prolific guest on other people's podcasts. So I really want I mean, obviously, not everyone comes into her Empire Builder having a podcast. We probably have, I don't know probably 5% start when they've already got a podcast but I guarantee it After six to 12 months, you're gonna have one. Because the advantages are so great. They open the door to so many different things to so many opportunities to expand your network to build your customer base to forming relationships to building that know, like and trust factor. And it's cheap and easy to do. And it's such a low cost, both on time and on money. Amazing. So we do that for podcasting. And then of course, we want you to be on other people's podcasts as well, because that will expand your reach and expand your audience there, too.

Number four is speaking. Now speaking is probably one of the scariest ones. You haven't done that before. So it's definitely a learned skill. And it takes practice. I remember when I started speaking publicly, oh, my gosh, I used to feel so sick all the time. Like it really, really frightened me. But speaking is not just keynotes, no, it's not just standing on big life stages. Speaking can be doing social media lives, we teach you how to nail your webinars, how to present in other people's programmes, and also how to create a keynote and rock the stage at live events. Because what we want to do is help you to package your expertise into presentations that add massive value, and then convert to customers. So one of the biggest things that I saw when the pandemic hit was we had all of these thought leaders and all of these really polished wonderful speakers and trainers come to us that had been speaking for years and years and years and getting paid an absolute fortune to do so. But had never really packaged that into products as well. So they came but they had small lists. And they had to figure out really quickly how do I package that expertise from my presentations into a product that we can then sell. And now what makes me so happy is because you know what it's like you see a speaker on stage. And if you love them, you're like that, that 45 minutes rocked my world, but more plays, I want more where that came from. And so if you've got a speaker that you love, you're like, How can I engage with them more? You know, most of the mentors that I have had most of the business coaches, most of the programmes that I've been in, have been because I have seen them live. I've seen them either on social media doing lives, or I've seen them do webinars, or I've seen them in other people's programmes, or I've seen them in live events. And I'm like, I want more of that. And then I engage them afterwards. So we definitely don't want to overlook speaking as scary as it may be.

Number five is a live launch strategy. Now, you don't have to live launch. Like I said, you don't have to do any of these things if they don't vibe with you. But live launching is one of the quickest ways to build your business. It's one of the best marketing activities that you can do, like I am launching right now. If you're following along, you know that there's daily emails, there is a couple of days, every couple of times every day of social media, there's extra podcast episodes. It's like a fire hydrant of marketing. And it only happens a couple of times a year for a week. So my audience will forgive me for the fire hydrant. But it's kind of like I can't keep up the marketing pace all the time. One, I mean, you'd be exhausted, but to your audience would also be like, Oh my gosh, like this, this chick, she doesn't stop trying to sell me stuff. And so it's so beautiful. Like, I think it's just incredible to go for six months of the year, I can do nothing but add value, just add value in podcast episodes, trainings, templates, lead magnets, all the things love up on my current customers, like just focus on that. And then a week comes and it's like, boom, if you loved all of this, Jump On In, now's the time and then doors close. And then I can get back to doing my job rather than being like the marketing all the time and the selling all the time. So it's so good. And it really does reach so wide is what makes it a really good marketing activity. So when you're starting to build, and you're kind of in that, you know, not to to 300,000 you can really launch two, three, sometimes even four times a year. And launching in itself is what will start to build that marketing. So it's a compounding thing. Often people will launch one or two times and be like, Oh, like that was a whole lot of effort for like that return. You know, you might make 1020 $30,000 On your first launch and that can be disappointing to people but don't be disappointed because if you keep up consistently, then it will skyrocket because that momentum catches on, people start to get to know it and then when you launch the same I'm seeing again and again and again, you will be known for that. And people will be like, Oh my god, I remember that I missed it last time, I'm not gonna miss it again, imagine where I could be in six months, if I implemented this I'm in. And hopefully, that's what you're saying about her Empire Builder right now. But it will live watching fulfil your programmes with your perfect customers better than anything else. Because you can be so clear on your messaging that you know, the people that have been in your world for a while they're like, Well, yeah, it's a no brainer. Like, of course, I'm gonna give this a go. Because they've already been exposed to all of them.

Number six is team, you can get your first six figures completely solo, no problem, maybe you can get even a little bit beyond that. But after that, it's time to start outsourcing so that you can spend your time and energy on the things that will bring the greatest return and business growth. So like team is ever changing, we've had really fast growth inside of my business, really fast, nearly 100% growth year on year. So it's kind of like every time we add a team member, it's time to add another team. And so it's this constant cycle of getting team training up, we've gone up again, getting team trading. But for me with my time and energy, it needs to be spent on so many different things that if there's anything repeatable in the business, or things that can be done behind the scenes, then the team can do that. And so, you know, I encourage everyone to start with someone part time, like when I first started in online business, I had an assistant for 10 hours a week. So they would come in, they would do like all of my appointments, all of my social media scheduling, some repurposing of content, like the simple stuff. And then as I started getting busier, I had to start handing off more. So when you start running out of time, and you've got the budget for it, for me, it's always 20% 20% of revenue goes to Team. So as we start levelling up, then we go, alright, if we're under that 20%, I need to hurry up and hire because it means that I'm probably going to burn out, if I don't keep that under control. So I get that. But if we're over that, then I make sure all right, we're going to have to grow the business real quick to sustain this, otherwise, I'm going to end up eating into my profitability. So team is number six with that.

Then number seven is my love language: systems and automations. Systems are my love language. This is what makes business as easy as possible. Like if you want to express love to me, just give me a list, especially colour coded off. It's beautiful. I really think that online business is so incredibly leveraged coming from a service based business and I had a retail business before, like, what you have to do in those businesses compared to this business. It's so much easier and leveraged like Yeah, I mean, everything takes effort and hard work for sure. But gosh, it's the easy way to get it done. You can do so much with so little in online business because of the systems you can create, and how much can be automated. And that's something obviously, I'm a business strategist, and I love systems. So that is probably one of the most I think, I mean, if I asked my members what the most valuable part of her Empire Builder is, I reckon 90% of them say community, because they love the community and the encouragement and cheering each other on. But what I think is the most valuable part is the systems because all of that community enables people to go after their dreams and support one another and inspire them. But you need the strategy to be able to implement. You need the system, you need the sitemaps going alright, so I'm going to build a pipeline. What elements of the pipeline do I need to do with that? And then once we've created that, how can we replicate it? Or when we're doing a live launch? We need a checklist. Great. Here's the checklist for when I'm setting up a podcast, here's the checklist for when I'm hiring a new team member, here's the checklist for that, like everything that you need to do inside your online business. I created you a system for it. It's all there. And that I think just like it takes years and years to fumble through and figure out all of those things and how to optimise that for the greatest results. So instead of doing that, like I think the most valuable part is going you don't have to think about it. You just go: I need this, you type it into the search bar and there it is in a beautiful colour coded format. So it is what I think it is whether people realise it or not. The biggest time saving thing that can make you the most money is quickly.

Number eight is customer love. I mean a business is only successful and sustainable when you get results for your customers time and time again. That's really it. If you are not focusing on amazing customer service, your business will go down, it'll be like a flash in the pan, I see a lot of people that nail marketing, like nail it like they're MASTER marketers. But then they can't fulfil those transformation promises. And so it's like, it's like a one hit wonder they kind of do it for a year or two. And everyone's like, Whoa, where did they come from, and then they're gone. Because they didn't knock their socks off their customers. So in an industry filled with big promises, like the online industry, be the one to under promise and over deliver, and you will wow your clients. And that will get them to stay with you. So when you're going through that ascension model, so many of my clients are repeat clients, and they tell their friends, so in a marketing sense, like, you don't really have to put as much effort into marketing your business, when you get great results for people because their friends will go, how are you doing this, and they will tell them because of you. And then they will join it. And on and on. It goes like word of mouth is how, you know, a traditional business is built. And an online business is no different. In fact, I think it's even more prevalent. Because let me tell you, social media word spreads really fast. So you want to love your customers, as much as you possibly can. within budget. Obviously, you don't want to spend all your money and all your time over delivering to the point where you have no boundaries and the point where you're unprofitable, but giving more than what you promise, always. So you're doing this to help people with the knowledge that you have love for your customers. And I guarantee everything else will work.

Number nine is financial knowledge. So often. I'll have friends or colleagues that will talk to me and go, How do you do this? Like how much money are you actually making? And I am very smart with money. And I am very conscious of profit. And I think that that is the difference. So I learnt the hard way there's a saying: revenue’s for vanity, profit is for sanity. It's one of my favourite sayings, because this is my 17th year in business. I don't think I made much money at all, like, like, $30,000 a year until about year seven, year eight. I was a slow learner. But it was such a good training ground because I had no financial knowledge at all. So I didn't know like I did general maths at school, I barely got by. Money scared, me numbers scared me, spreadsheets scared meLike, how do we even do that, and then created a system that's really easy to read like Greenlight, create a budget that works, you know, have control over all of those numbers. And once I could do that, and know the different financial levers to pull in my business, I can do a whole lot more with a whole lot less because I don't waste time and I don't waste money. There are two things that I respect greatly. And I spend a lot of money like I invest I have spent I should do the numbers actually. But I spent probably between 50 and $60,000 in the last 12 months on coaching, conferences, and consulting. And I continue to invest. So I am by no means frugal, I am conscious with everything that I put my money into, I will ensure that I'm going to get a return from that. And I don't I don't waste any of it. So I share all of that knowledge with her Empire Builder members. Because what I see often is, especially in the online industry, a lot of people will throw around topline numbers, you know, go, I just did 100k launch, or I just did a million dollar launch or whatever it may be, which is awesome. Like yay.

But if it takes $800,000 to do a million dollar launch, I don't want that business because running a million dollar business is actually not simple. You know, you need a lot of team you need a lot of systems. There's a lot of moving parts and a lot of things going on at one time. So I would rather have a $200,000 business that has $160,000 profit than a million dollar business with a $200,000 profit. And so it's looking at, you know, what does business cost you and how can you do it in a way that runs a really healthy really sustainably and also makes you a bucket tonne of cash that you can then enjoy Ask him the things that set your heart on fire and solidify your legacy wealth for your children, for your family for your future. So just like time, we learned to use our money in the ways that will bring us the biggest return.

And then the final one is mindset. So it's always perplexed me to go, why does some people take action that causes success? And some people don't? And what I think is, it's all down to beliefs. It's all down to the stories that we tell ourselves of, Am I worthy of this? Am I good enough for this? You know, there are probably different things right now that when I say that, you're thinking in your head, like, I know, I could do this. But what's stopping me? So I am massive on business strategy. But you can do all of the nine things that I've spoken about already. And if you don't work on personal development, to enable yourself to take aligned action and actually, like, do the thing, then no amount of strategy will help. And this is coming from, like, someone that loves strategy more than anything. Because a lot of it is like you can have all the strategies. I mean, I think the same is true, vice versa. Like you can be working on mindset, and doing every fluffy mindset course under the sun. But if you're not taking the massive action that's strategic, then you're also not going to get anywhere. It's a combination of Say it with me, all the things. Those things. So what we want to make sure is going, you know, we want to take that aligned action, what is stopping you from taking that aligned action? And how can you help yourself to do the thing that you want to do and identifying one of the biggest things through my business growth because I mean, this never stops for me, I read books like every couple of weeks, I read a new book, I listen to podcasts, I listen to audiobooks like this never stops. New level, new devil. Every time you try and do something you've never done before, you're going Holy guacamole, here I am, again, crapping my pants. And so you really need to figure out how you can help yourself, and what are those triggers for you?

And one of the biggest learnings for me was identifying where am I resisting? And where do I just not want that result. And so sometimes, like I can get to things, and I noticed that resistance, and I notice, not so much procrastination, but sometimes it's procrastination. And sometimes it's just, you know, ignoring it, or not taking the action that I had planned to take. And I have to really sit down and meditate on that and go, Okay, am I not taking that action? Because it's not aligned with me. And, you know, a coach told me to do it, or I read somewhere to do it. And it appealed to me, or someone in the industry did it and I'm like, Shit, I should be doing that too. Like, is it that? Or am I just scared? Do I just have fear. And I need to bust through that. And I'm just trying to keep myself safe. And I'm trying to keep myself in my comfort zone. And often, because I'm a big dreamer. I'm a very ambitious woman. I have big dreams, big plans in the world. And so for me, it's usually that I've got like, courageous hangover is what it is for me, like, I take that couple of steps and do things well out of my comfort zone. And then I'm left there going home, again, like I think I need a little bit of a break. And when that happens, I take the break, you know, that's why I travel so much. That's why I switch off on weekends so I can take the break so I can reset, exercise that resilience muscle, fill up my tank again, and then have the courage to go after the things that I want to do.

Because I do not want to live a small life. I want to live a big life, I want to feel alive, I want to feel excited, I want to feel playful, I want to go and do all of the things that I want to do. And I don't want that pesky little voice inside my head telling myself I'm not good enough and telling myself I can't do it to stop me from doing the awesome things and making the impact in the world that I want to make. And so I do a lot of work on my mindset and we've run a mindset session every single month inside her Empire Builder for that exact reason.
